Great, the 60s were more enlightened.
I was bored (and suffering from temporary stupidity, apparently) so I watched the movie I Spy.  Now, I've never seen the 60s television show the movie was (loosely) based on (I don't like Bill Cosby because of his attitude toward children...long story.), but my parents watched it, so I know a little about it.  And what I know about the television show is what irked me about the movie.  You see, the television show was more enlightened, racially speaking, than the movie - at least in premise.

In the show, Cosby's character was the experienced spy - his cover was as trainer to Culp's less experience spy, who was posing as a tennis star.  In the movie, Eddie Murphy is a boxer, and not any kind of spy, who is supposed to provide cover to Owen Willson's spy.  Gee, great, from experienced spy to boxer, that's really a step forward.  Not.

Now, the movie was also boringly predictible, but it was the changes in the characters that left a bad taste in my mouth.  -_-

I don't like Bill Cosby because of his classist "blame the victim" attitude on race issues, so we've got that in common. (Actually, I think I know what you mean with his attitude towards children, and I've never like it much, either.)

Re: the movie, I hate to be one of these people, but I swear things are getting worse. It's even more significant that I Spy was the first American TV drama to have a black lead; it was downright ground-breaking, or so I'm told.

Oh, great, another reason not to like Bill Cosby. Blargh.

Yeah, the TV show was ground-breaking. And apparently not only ahead of its time, but ahead of our time. *sigh*

ew :o

in some ways we are kinda worse off now b/c we think we're alrdy so enlightened we fall prey to all sorts of subconscious biases without even thinking about examining them :\

And our subconscious biases are really, really unenlightened. It's kind of scary to think about what nasty prejudices lurk just below the surface of...well...of any of us. Kind of makes me wish there was a pill we could take to get rid of them.
